True to its name, First Writings presents the firstfruits of what Mrs. E. G. de White wrote. Their messages move and encourage the hearts of their readers, they will be able to appreciate more deeply the truths presented if they clearly remember the circumstances of the historical times in which the three books covered by this work were written.
Here and there allusive expressions are used to events that, to be understood, must be addressed within the framework of the activities to which Seventh-day Adventists were engaged between 1840 and 1850. For example, references to "nominal Adventists" could to be interpreted by some readers as designating certain Seventh-day Adventists devoid of fervor, when in fact they allude to those who had participated in the great awakening of 1831-1844, but then did not accept the truth of Saturday and were among those who today We would call "first day Adventists."
Towards the end of this work there are three chapters entitled: "The First Angel's Message," "The Second Angel's Message" and "The Third Angel's Message." It is possible that in consulting these chapters the reader thinks of finding a categorical interpretation of Revelation 14 and the application that corresponds to the messages given by the three angels; but when one goes through those chapters, it penetrates rather the experience of those who participated in the proclamation of the first two messages and initiated the proclamation of the third.
The author, Ellen G. White, participated in that experience herself, and in writing she assumed that the reader had become familiar with the beginning and development VIII of the Adventist awakening, as well as with the birth and progress of the Adventist movement. of the seventh day, which began after 1844.
Today, more than a century separates us from those heroic times and there is no longer among the Seventh-day Adventists such a thorough knowledge of what was experienced then. If the reader of the precious little book that is First Writings remembers this clearly, he will be better able to give a correct application to the teachings and message of this book.
It is therefore worth noting here some of the outstanding details of what was experienced by the Adventist observers on Saturday during the decade before the first publication of what appears in First Writings.
In the opening paragraphs of this book, Mrs. White briefly refers to her conversion and the beginning of her Christian experience. He also explains that he attended explanatory lectures on the biblical doctrine concerning the personal advent of Christ, which was believed imminent.
The great Adventist awakening to which the author refers in a few words was a worldwide movement. It was produced as a result of the careful study that many gave to the biblical prophecies and also the fact that in the whole world many accepted the good news concerning the coming of Jesus.
But it was in the United States where the Adventist message was proclaimed and accepted by more people. As the biblical prophecies concerning the return of the Lord Jesus were accepted by capable men and women, belonging to many churches, the result was that the movement gained many followers.
These did not, however, create a distinct and separate religious organization, but the Adventist hope produced profound religious revivals that benefited all Protestant churches, and induced many skeptics and unbelievers to publicly confess their faith in the Bible and in God.
